Jac Scott Photography
My good friend and long-time collaborator Jacob Scott asked me to design a full identity and web portfolio for his long-established photography practice. I am a huge fan of Jac's work and was excited to build a site to showcase it.
I really felt that Jac's photos speak for themselves and I wanted to let them do all the talking. Giant thumbnails compose the vast majority of the single-page site, and while there are many images, they load quickly and in succession, much quicker than other flash-based portfolio systems.

Legato
Last year, I took a road-trip down to San Juan Capitstrano to assist on a photo-shoot of some students working with the Scripps institute and Utah Valley University. During the long ride, my friend Weston Colton took some great shots of the road stretched between here and there.
From that experience, Weston and I compiled Legato: Scenes from a Road, a collection of three 16-page books of photography, each a meditation of sorts on one aspect of the trip , and an eight page essay I wrote about slow travel. The books were printed offset, and held together with a letterpressed cigar-band.
Branding & Collateral
I've had the opportunity to work on some great new identities this year, ranging from wordmarks for small government operations to full collateral for a few non-profit organizations.
Branding work is something I love to work on. While the constraints are many, I like working within those limitations to establish a unique and memorable presence for a new entity.

Illustrations
Illustration is my first love in graphic design. I've been drawing since I've been able to hold a crayon, and I continually strive to become proficient in new mediums and diverse styles.
I work extremely fast when it comes to drawing, and that has made me a valuable asset when it comes to conceptualization and delivering on deadline.
Presented below are some recent illustrations I've worked on for various clients and personal projects.
Contributor Headcuts
Christopher Dowling commissioned me to draw a fewheadcuts for the contributing photographers in his upcoming publication, Printed. Judging by the calibre of its participants, Printed promises to be an incredible piece, and I'm thrilled to be involved.
left to right, top to bottom: Megumi Maruo, François Coquerel, Christopher Dowling, Severin Koller, Mark Peckmezian, Red de Leon, Alec Soth, Miranda Lehman, Nanako Koyama, Jason Koxvold, Alena Waggershauser, and Noah Kalina.
12 Days of Christmas
A couply of years ago, I put together a set of illustrations from the 12 Days of Christmas as a dorky self-promotional set of cards during the holiday season.
These are a few of my favorites from that set, including Nine (single) Ladies Dancing, Eight Maids a Milking, Five Golden Rings, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree.
Editorial
& Spot Illustration
The following illustrations accompanied various articles and stories in a variety of publications, both on-screen and in-print.
I feel like these are a pretty good indicator of my range and skill set, as well as the creativity I bring to the job.
Art Direction
& Conceptualization
At Utah Valley University, I had the opportunity to step into the role of Art Director from time to time. While this isn't an area I've had much experience in, I feel like the results of these stints has been noteworthy.
Below are listed some of the stand-out projects from these experiences. Please see project notes for various credits.
UVU Athletics
UVU Athletics is one of the key players in the Great West conference in NCAA Division 1 athletics. Year after year they place at the top of their conference, earning them the nickname "best in the west."
I worked closely with the athletic director to develop a concept, and then delivered concept sketches to our photographers to execute. The results earned a place in the Salt Lake City AIGA 100 show in 2011.
UVU Promo Poster
UVU Recruitment approached me to create a promotional poster to be mailed out to local high schools to promote the university and get students excited for the college experience. I wanted to create something both fun and useful, something that would garner attention in the mailbox, and staying power after it had been opened.
I contacted one of my favorite illustrators, Meg Hunt, to illustrate the piece, because I knew her playful, but sophisticated style would deliver exactly what we wanted. The result was a poster that really blew our audience away, and was also featured in the 2010 SLC AIGA 100 show.
Motion: UVU Needs More
This last year I cut my teeth on AfterEffects, and these are some of my first efforts. I worked on a video campaign addressing the space situation at Utah Valley University.
These are the portions of the video I created, both illustrating and animating the sequences. You'll have to forgive the lack of context, the video is still in production.
communication
I've made myself available via email, twitter, or by phone, so feel free to drop me a line regarding just about anything. However, I'm a big fan of signal over noise, so why don't we just keep our Facebooks and our Linkedins to ourselves?
about me
My name is Jory Dayne — I was named after a campy 1971 pulp western by Milton R. Bass. I'm a graphic designer and illustrator living in a vale between a lake and some very large mountains in Utah. I like it very much.
